As we know, English regarded as a lingua franca/global language all over the world. People who are from different nations . Communicate with each other in English, It is spread across culture and improve economy. There are several of reasons to present why it is as a lingua franca. Firstly, English become language of technology, America grew powerful through technology innovation. Furthermore, economy is a majority factor to lead English as a super language. People do business from different countries, and make money from trade by communicating in English. It shows global economy can be improvement. Finally, it is educational language , it means many subjects use it to describe these knowledge to be understood and involved such as Medicine, Computer, Engineering and accounting.

I completely agree with you. English now becoming the language of better future because there are a lot of advantages of English over the world. Nobody can deny the power of the US economy with the democracy of  institution, others country will look at its successful and follow American way. The language they use is English, as a consequence , other countries ,that  want to trade with America, have to learn English. As a result, American will take English to the other places where  they trade and therefore English is able to extend its influence and power wider over the world.  However, globalisation and economy always come together and also promote the rests of the world. Considering the future, as far as I concerned English will remain to be successful if no countries can replace the impact of the US economy. That why we have to learn  English and using English.

Here, I agree with your opinions. But I want to present English as a huge impact on the economy by tourism industry.
Tourism industry is a essential part of every countries' economic development. English is a international language around the world. It is convenient to speak each other who comes from different countries. For this reason,  many people enjoy to travel other countries and understand interesting cultures. All of this due to English benefits people to communicate. For that, tourism industry prosper markedly.
Also, English can make people to exchange the new technology between different countries. It is brings more benefits on the economy than before.

I totally agree with you. English is really a potential impact on many economies over the world, particularly in developing countries. It is not only an effort to develop the whole aspect of  economy, but also open up a lot of opportunities to become a members of globalisation  in order to improve standard of living. For example, in my country Vietnam English becomes very important in both economy and education sectors because it is a key to have a better lives and take advantages for future. Every change in American economy is directly influence on my country. In addition, Knowing English would help my country to improve economy as quick as other English country get.

It  is true that if "everyone how  can, should learn English" because English these days is the global language in the world . person who is address English have opportunity to get better jobs, salary and  workplace. On the other hand, it is not simple for everyone to learn English. Learn another language require  free time and may cost a lot of money. Moreover that could be difficult for some people because they are busy or they  do not have  funds to study in English courses, so I think it is dependent on  situation and feeling of people who are learning English to  recover successful result.

I see your point and I also agree with topic. It is probably true in varieties of ways. Almost of us know English is becoming a global lingua franca and nobody can deny its advantages that impact of our life as well as the economies over the world. English is not the language of the future, of opportunity and of money, but also is a prime tool of communication to open up the door to other countries. In my country, government encourages people to learn English as second language because understanding English is the best of appropriate way to  improve the economy and the standard of ling as well at the moment . But not only English, we also have a lot of other languages as Hindi, mandarin, France and Spanish. They could be useful languages for everyone who are able to learn. We can not ignore of it

My Third Reflection

This week is really exciting because we have a public day on Tuesday , there is a lot of homeworks to do and a warning me that the fourth week is coming sooner than  previous weeks. I can not imagine that i will have to put a mount of knowledge in two weeks with my research of  oral presentation, reading more complicated with two article and listening requires  a faster note taking skill and deeper understand . The most difficult for me is witting because I have not  done my first writing test very well , even I wrote enough 500 words but my idea was not logic, always repeat some adjective and no frequently paraphrasing. I admit that my ability of develop idea is very slow so it sometimes takes me 1 hours to write only introduction or one paragraph as well. This is because I did not spend time to learn new vocabulary and use them instantly in the simple sentences. I propose to do some work on my oral presentation on Tuesday but I can not do it . So my work on this week become harder than I thought , particularly listening I even do not  have time to practice. I hope the end of this week my bosses will not  recommend  much homeworks ^O-O^ .

MY SECOND REFLECTION

The second week was over and also its time for me to look back what I have done and improved for my English over a week.

+Reading:

I found that it is seem a little bit difficult because sometimes I got confused when I was looking for appropriate answer for each question. I can understand the article but don’t know what the answers exactly are. However, our teachers, Carla and Sara, also spend time to explain for us how to analyse an article, which part the answer locate on and eliminate other information that is not related to the questions. We have much more practices than last week as well.

+Writing:

This week Carla did not focus too much on listening because she realised that we need more time to practice writing and the most important reason is that we will have the first writing test next week. She wants us to understand clearly an analysed essay including structure, language and especially the Belt principle through a simple essay and answering any questions that we are still wondering why and misunderstand as well. We also have to finish an homework essay by Thursday as we did last week, but this time it is 500 words rather than a paragraph with an argument.

+Listening:

Carla and Sara spent the whole Tuesday and a half of Friday in order to help us practicing our listening before we take exam in week 4. We mainly listened to the lectures and try to use note-taking skill as much as we can to get specific information. It was really hard when I listened at the first time because my note-taking skill was not very well. Therefore, I always leave out some important information as main ideas and specific words when the speed of speaker becomes faster. Sometimes I completely get almost information when I hear from lecture but I can not find out the answer for the question that related to the topic. That is because I did not take notes logic and clear in order. By the end Tuesday, Carla recommended us a CD which she took from REW. It contains many lectures that are relevant to a variety of topics and really good for developing listening. We are lucky because Carla let us make a copy and encourage us to listen to it on the weekend so as to practice. I intend to improve my note-taking skill step by step through listening this CD everyday for 1 hour. Listening is really a important skill because when I practice listening, my speaking also advance.

+Speaking:

I would like to say that my speaking is advanced very quickly because this level requires ability of speaking fluently and clearly without a few mistakes. However, everyone in my class speak English very well, particularly Leon and Derek and it is definitely an great opportunity for me to make my speaking more fluent when I talk or discuss with them in class or outside class.

My frist reflection week

I was really excited on my first day at E7. I saw a lot of class mates of mine who have studied with me in E6 and new friends as well. The first morning we mainly introduced ourselves to each other in my class and my teacher, Carla. She made an adjective list that related to our name in order to remember all members of my class. She also gave us some information about our course. This course is really much more difficult than I thought because the style of learning is quite different from other level and the way I learn in my country. I was confused when my teacher was trying to explain what we will have to do in this level. We have to complete a lot of tasks as class activities and blog journey. However, this level also gave me a lot of advantages and opportunities to advance my English before I study my Masters. In fact, we got used to new style of learning gradually over one week.  I’ve found that reading skills at this level are very important because it requires a deeper understanding of English and a wider academic vocabulary.

Carla has also taught us how to analyze an article in both reading and writing skills. My work writing was quite difficult because I have never wrote an essay like a response essay, but fortunately provided us with some clues about structure. On Thursday and Friday I found out that I have to improve my vocabulary. We practiced listening and presentation with Sara , our another teacher , particularly on Friday. We discussed about some topics as well.

Although I thought I would have a hard weekend. I have to finish all my work as well as complete my blog and prepare my topical presentations.

Saturday, October 23, 2010

I have been studying in English at REW for six months. I had very few problems in that time but they have increased significant when I was studying in E7. I am completely surprised about it because it has proved more difficult and more complex than previous levels I have studied.

This level requires ability to learn independently, a variety of complicated vocabulary and the most important is a deeper understanding of English. I have already set up a particular plan for my English. It will comprise of my goals and strategies for each skills that I will be able to speak English fluently after 12 months. I will also write down some reflections on how I am feeling about this level every week

Well, lets have a look in my plan :

1   Listening : The area of English causes me the most problems listening. So listening will be my priority for the rest my time at REW.

My goals for listening are able to understand my lecturer or tutor when I study Sustainable Energy at Masters level at RMIT, also develop my take-notes skill and catch up the whole main idea of lectures quickly

The first strategy that I will use to achieve my goal of improved listening skill is to practice using my software that I have bought, called Face2Face. It is published by Cambridge Press. In fact, it can be used for any skills to become fluent in English. However, I like the way it presents a video or images and at the same time it has an audio track that either has the imagines or is a conversation. This software allows me to test my understand of what I am hearing.

The second strategy I will use is to only watch television with subtitles on. This way I can learn more quickly. I have found that this way is good when I want to learn Australian expression. For example, the expression “ she’s pretty good" made no sense when I saw it. The man was referring to a car. But then I came to understand the word ‘ pretty ‘  meant quality.

The third strategy I will use to improving listening is to try and paraphrase things that I hear that I find a bit difficult. I can then ask my friends, my teacher or my uncle if I have understood what was said.

2   Speaking is also a problem for me. I find that local Australian speakers talk too fast and I am struggling to understand them. This slow my answers because I am trying to interpret what has been said. However, if my strategy to develop my listening is successful, it will help my speaking I believe because I will understand the conversation more quickly.

My first approach to advance my speaking skill is to practice, practice and practice. I have a heavy Hanoi  accent that can make me hard to understand. I practice a lot with my friends and my uncle. This way I can see how the word is formed by watching their mouths. Then once they have told me that I have said the word correctly, I repeat it many times until I am comfortable with it.

My second strategy is to use my Face2Face software. It allow me to hear a word, pause the sound and repeat it until I have said correctly. This way I can practice at my own pace. I have a pair of headphones that allow me to block out distractions so I can concentrate.

My third strategy is to be brave and practice speaking with strangers. For example  when I buy a ticket on the train, or when I buy lunch at Melbourne central. Each time I gain more confidence and I am able to do something new.

3   Writing

The third area of concern for me to learn English is writing. I am lucky because I have found this to be the easiest for me so far and this makes it easy to enjoy. My goals in this skill are to be able to write a varieties of academic essay without a fews mistakes, extending of  vocabulary, an ability of manage time and write much more than before.

The first strategy I have to advance my writing is to constantly ask my friends, teacher and my uncle to read my book. My uncle has a good way to help me improve. My uncle will read my work and then ask me to read it aloud if he knows it is wrong. When I do this he will say to me “ Does that sound correct to you “. I know when he says this that it is wrong and it makes me think about it. But hearing myself say the words helps me improving writing because I can hear it is correct.

The second strategy I use is to rewrite work and compare my writing with the original to understand if the meaning is the same. When we are speaking this method is called paraphrasing, and so this is a writing form of paraphrasing.

The third approach I will use is to read English books to see how the author has written his work. If his work is interesting, I will try to understand how he did it. I also have to use a dictionary when I read English book because there are many words I have not seen before or I have forgotten.

When I look for a new word in a dictionary I underline it. If I have to look for that word a gain I can see that I have looked for it before it has a pencil line under it.

4   Reading

Finally, I will need to improve my reading skills for English if I am to be successful at the Masters level. I also have understanding deeply any kind of academic books and journal and using reading skill effectively to find out what really necessary is as via research on internet

My first strategy is to read English books. I can not read hard books yet. When I read an English book I have to use the dictionary a lot. But it is getting easier with more reading.

My second strategy is to use my Face2Face software. Because it has many tests I am able to check my understanding. The program will tell a story either by audio or by video. Then the program tests my understanding with a written test and I have to read the answers and select the correct one. This way of learning to read is more fun and makes the task easier because I am allowed to do the test until I have gotten the correct answers.

My third strategy is to read the newspaper. I read the Herald Sun, MX and sometimes The Age. I find that it is harder to read the newspaper than English books or Face2Face because it uses more difficult words. However my strategy is to continue reading a small part of the newspaper every day until I can understand it and start to read more and more of it.
